I wouldn't complete that phrase with "Tester". Nor SQA. Nor Quality Assurance. In fact, the idea of working in Technology was not even on my radar. I wanted to work with children. That was my first dream job - child psychologist. As I looked for colleges, I stumbled upon a university that had a degree in International Relations.
I didn't have Google back then but worked at a library and began researching careers with this degree. While in college, I had heard about those studying or majoring in Computer Science. The problem with that was science: it's not my favorite. So I stayed away from anything computer related and mostly used the Macs for those 15-20 page papers.

I got a job out of college as a Project Manager. But it was in for the Technology department of a global trading company. I had no idea about the projects I was managing; what updating an application entailed or testing the changes to the front-end of the application. I had to manage status and how long it would take to fix the bugs so we could release by X date.
Bugs? Who is writing and responsible for these bugs? SQA. I introduced myself to SQA and began to slowly understand more and more the details of these projects. I also began to understand the 'tech' side of my job. SQA became my interpreter of what Development had delivered and what Operations would be implementing.
As life would have it, I was given an opportunity to work as an SQA Analyst. I learned UNIX and how to query, and FTP files. I learned things I didn't see myself doing. With each company, I learned more about SQA and the techniques, skills, tools, and approach to testing. I learned (still learning) what the career of a tester means.
Today, it's more common to hear and know about software and test engineers. Although it is common, the testing aspect is still not something you hear kids say they want to be when they grow up. So this blog is to encourage people to google SQA or Testing; classes, courses and trainings. I also think it's a good idea to talk to people that work in testing and understand the mentality. I love what I do and hope more people love it too.
